Spanreeds
The Way of KingsSpanreeds are paired writing devices whose linked gemstones allow one reed to reproduce, at a distance, the movements made with another. In the scenes involving Dalinar Kholin and Shallan Davar, they are not merely conveniences for communication: they make absence actionable. A message written miles away can appear in real time before a waiting reader, carrying orders, research, suspicion, or betrayal across the gap between separated chambers and camps.
Definition and Physical Form
A spanreed resembles an ordinary writing reed but has a small infused ruby affixed to it. Dalinar Kholin keeps five of them upright in pen holders on a bookshelf, making the instruments part of the practical furniture of his clerks’ room rather than exotic objects displayed for ceremony. One reed pulses slowly when it is receiving a communication, providing a visible signal that a connection is active.
The device requires more than simply placing pen to paper. A clerk moves the blinking reed to a writing desk, clips paper onto a writing board, fits an ink vial into its socket, and removes the stopper. Because the writing board must be level, small oil vials with central bubbles are checked and adjusted before writing begins. The procedure gives the spanreed a distinctly technical character: communication depends on alignment, preparation, and controlled manipulation of several parts.
Operation and Use
The receiving clerk first turns the spanreed’s gemstone one notch to acknowledge the request. After leveling the writing board and inking the reed, she places it at the upper-left dot of the page, holds it upright, and twists the gemstone setting again. Once her hand is removed, the reed remains poised against the paper as though an unseen hand were holding it. It then begins to write by mimicking the exact movements of the conjoined reed being used elsewhere.
The result is not a message copied after the fact but a remote duplication of the act of writing itself. Dalinar Kholin watches familiar lines appear in violet ink while reddish smoke rises faintly from the gemstone. The physical effects make the transmission visible and material: distance is not erased abstractly, but bridged through a moving reed, an infused ruby, ink, paper, and a chain of synchronized gestures.
Communication, Trust, and Secrecy
Spanreeds connect people who cannot meet, but the connection does not automatically create trust. When Brightness Danlan Morakotha arrives to handle Dalinar Kholin’s communication, he regards her with suspicion because she might be a spy for another highprince. The device therefore enters a political environment in which every channel of communication is also a possible channel of infiltration. Its usefulness depends on the reliability of the person operating it as much as on the reliability of the mechanism.
A separate exchange shows how the same technology supports covert planning. Shallan Davar communicates with an unseen correspondent while living in austere quarters inside the underground Kharbranthian Conclave. The spanreed allows discussion of her growing access to Jasnah Kholin and of the Soulcaster that Shallan Davar hopes to steal. The correspondence records practical security details: Jasnah Kholin wears the Soulcaster during the day, locks it in a safe at night, and keeps the key around her neck. The spanreed thus converts private observation into actionable intelligence, allowing a distant partner to question Shallan Davar and receive her replies.
Narrative and Political Significance
The spanreed’s most important effect is structural as well as practical. It creates a live link between locations that the narrative otherwise keeps apart, allowing handwriting from miles away to enter the immediate scene without requiring travel, messengers, or a conventional face-to-face encounter. The device makes the larger world feel simultaneously distant and present: a remote hand can interrupt local action, and a local reply can immediately alter the plans of someone elsewhere.
Its operation also contrasts ordinary writing with technologically mediated writing. Jasnah Kholin’s elegant handwriting remains recognizable even when produced by a reed she is not physically holding, preserving personal identity across the transmission. Yet the writing is initially indecipherable to Dalinar Kholin, so the device can convey presence without guaranteeing understanding. In Shallan Davar’s correspondence, the same channel carries both tactical precision and moral danger, binding scholarship, espionage, and theft into a single exchange.
Spanreeds therefore symbolize connection under conditions of uncertainty. They overcome physical separation while leaving political suspicion, unequal knowledge, and hidden motives intact. Their blinking gemstones, phantom movements, and faint smoke turn communication into a visible performance, reminding the reader that every apparently direct message depends on a chain of objects, operators, and relationships that may themselves be compromised.
